Atmosphere

So I'm sitting here half-cut after a few Guinness, and I've been sat here at home for the last half hour with my head swaying, watching videos of supporters across Europe on YouTube and the racket they make, which got me thinking about what we could do to improve our atmosphere, home and away.
The best atmosphere I've experienced in the London was Seville. Everything about that night was special, and the place rocked. Probably one of a dozen times the place felt proper.
What can we do to have more of that regularly, bar a run in the later stages of a competition? Some European clubs seem to have a rocking atmosphere at all games, win, lose or draw.
I'm not advocating Ultra groups. It's all Pre-orchestrated chants and dance moves like a ballet, and it's not all that intimidating. Their only use is the constant noise. Options are limited, though, and clubs throughout the UK are adopting an Ultras movement.
I also mentioned our away support, which is one of, if not the best away followings in England. My issue, though, is our song book - Bubbles, COYI, Bubbles again and again. We can be flat away a lot, too. How can that we improve that?
I expect shit for digging out the say support, but I travel/enough to have an opinion that we travel well, but are not the most atmospheric of supports at times.

I sometimes wonder if the 'London' attitude has something to do with it?
Having played in various bands up and down the country to a wide range of audiences, London crowds are generally more reserved. People used to stand with their arms crossed giving off a sort of 'c'mon, impress me' vibe.
Very different from other parts of the country where enthusiasm tended to be a lot less guarded.

“Safe standing” areas would help. There are fans who want to sing but they are scattered around the ground, rather than situated in a concentrated area.

What’s so wrong with “pre orchestrated”. A group organizing tifos, flares etc. it all adds to the atmosphere.

Seville was probably the best atmosphere over there since we moved. Shame the other Europa games got nowhere near it.

Frankfurt was a let down. Lyon was ok. Hard to expect any atmosphere from the group games.
I reckon the Europa Conf playoff will have a better atmosphere than any of last season’s group games as it actually has something riding on it.

I got taken to a couple of games at UP in the late 80s as a youngster and although the atmosphere didn’t exactly blow me away I was too young to really appreciate it.
I can judge on the 100 plus games I have seen at UP and then the London Stadium from 1995 onwards and the atmosphere was never that great Imo especially compared to a number of other stadiums I have attended as a neutral.
West Ham’s away support (despite the repetitive nature of some of the songs) is pretty good but the atmosphere at home games from the mid 90s to today has always been a bit overrated Imo.
It does make me laugh at those who turn their nose up at other clubs fans making an effort to improve the atmosphere at their stadium’s. I would rather that than the 15th rendition of Bubbles half heartedly being sung in pockets around the stadium sandwiched between periods of total silence.

Not the backlash I was expecting, re-reading the thread with a slightly sore head this morning.
Colly, Ultras are a bit soft-lad for me.
The real problem is the gentrification of English football and the more stringent rules on what supporters can do. So mix young middle-class Essex boys more interested in their hair for Instagram likes and being under constant supervision, it's killed our atmosphere for the most part.
It doesn't seem to affect Leeds, mind, who, for my money, have a good home crowd and their away fans make a constant racket without the tarty Ultra bollocks.

Once Upton Park went to all seater it was Chav Corner & Bobby Moore lower that drove any atmosphere ... mainly because they became the homes for those who wanted to stand and wanted to make some noise.
With the ticket migration to London Stadium but I'd hope both lower stand ends behind each goal will become safe standing and help recreate that.
At London Stadium two games stand out .... the Friday night v Spurs when Lanzini scored to SPOIL the Spurs hopes of winning the league and the Sevilla game. The atmosphere CAN be there but those were both important matches, at NIGHT.
It was obvious walking from Stratford to the ground for Sevilla that the crowd were up and ready .... partly our first big Euro game against the multiple Europa winners & partly because it felt like it might be the last for a while.
That said there wasnt nearly the same vibe on the walk to the Frankfurt game which was odd.
Creating areas where noisy fans can stand would help.
Another suggestion .... so that eveyone is in their seats early. How about if your season ticket registers that you were in the ground 30 mins before kickoff for a certain amount of games (80%?) then you get a 10% discount on renewal.

The first idea might work, Sven and I like your optimism, but taking money out of our tight arse owners' pocket just won't happen.
We need to improve the songbook. Bubbles before and at the end of a game, not during. We've had some crackers over the years, but whoever gets the songs going used the same two or three.

The atmosphere in the 70s and 80s was brilliant (at times) and that’s not a “myth”or rose tinted glasses as the intimidation factor got mentioned in quite a few opposition player’s biographies from those times.
You’ve mentioned Leeds Utd and can think of a couple others, but I think we suffered more than most when it went all-seated. Clubs like Leeds Utd were in more expansive grounds, so the switch wasn’t all that big. We went from a very close to the pitch, hemmed/crammed in type environment (which helped to create a great atmosphere) to something a lot different and that change was a lot bigger than clubs who played in grounds that weren’t so tight and so close to the pitch.

All songs created today are there not to offend this makes it difficult to build in any humour and you just end up with cringeworthy stuff like ‘West Ham are massive’ yes it started off as a bit of sarcasm but now it’s being half believed by us and worse still taken on by clubs in all divisions….

West Ham are massive was hopefully a one season ironic song that will revert to Tottenham get battered.
Am hoping we can make a Wembley final this season so we can sing WILLIAM TAKES IT UP THE ARSE at the FA President.

Our away support when on point is up there with the best in the country.
Last year we had a variety of songs which was helped by our good form in Europe as half the songs referenced this.
Last year we had:
- Zouma kicking a cat song
- Fornals - going/banned from Vienna
- Bowens on fire
- Oy big boy (by far the best song in the prem)
- Forever blowing bubbles chitty bang bang version
- Twist and Shout
- We got super David Moyes
- Cresswell's (although this isn't really sung anymore due to Zouma's being same tune)
- Aint nobody like Lanzini
- Antonio on repeat
- Ohhhh Said Benrahma (shit song)
- Over land and sea
- David Moyes Claret and Blue army
Not really sure you need more songs than this when you also include songs we sing about other teams/players, cockney boys on a bender 'xxxx' is a sex offender, carlton cole, christian daily songs etc etc
My issue is that we do not really like songs with lots of words for our players. The Declan Rice song epitomises this. Also, its always the same boring tunes.
We need a bit more creativity but anything with more than 10 words is a real struggle to us.
